The polyamine biosynthetic enzyme ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is degraded by the 26 S proteasome via a ubiquitin-independent pathway. Its degradation is greatly accelerated by association with the polyamine-induced regulatory protein antizyme 1 (AZ1).
